Tesla media coverage report, October 2026

In October 2026 we read 8,571 English-language news stories and public posts about Tesla and four rival electric-car makers. Tesla took 70% of their news coverage, more than six times BYD in second place, and very little of it was Tesla's own voice: 7.5% of its news mentions were press releases, against 57% for Xpeng. Its month was told through a delivery beat, a new name for “Full Self-Driving” in Europe, a Roadster that flies and a merger with SpaceX that Elon Musk called “a good idea”.

  1. 1Tesla took 70.2% of the five carmakers' news mentions: 4,889 of 6,964, from 639 outlets. BYD came second with 10.6%, ahead of Rivian (8.2%), Xpeng (7.7%) and Lucid (3.3%).
  2. 2Tesla's busiest day was 21 October, with 747 news mentions: the day after Elon Musk told SpaceX's analysts that merging the two companies would be “a good idea”, and the day Tesla reported its third-quarter results. The merger talk made up 29% of Tesla's news for the month: 1,411 stories from 346 outlets.
  3. 3The Roadster reveal on 15 October drew 500 news stories and posts in its first 24 hours. Its largest audience was on X: the night before, Musk's post calling it “a candidate for greatest product demo of all time” reached 15.9 million views.
  4. 4On 9 October “Full Self-Driving” became “Tesla Assisted Driving” on Tesla's European websites as it sought EU approval. By the end of the month Italy's deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, had posted his support for a swift approval, with 70,032 views.

    A quarter of beats and misses

    Tesla reported 486,532 third-quarter deliveries on 2 October, against about 461,100 expected; the Financial Times noted they were still 2% lower than a year earlier as US buyers bought fewer EVs, and the shares rose 5%. Rivian reported record deliveries (19,248) the same day as its cheaper R2 SUV ramped up. Xpeng had reported 41,256 deliveries for September and 118,390 for the quarter on 1 October. Lucid's report on 5 October went the other way: it cut production by 38%, to 2,954 vehicles, its lowest since early 2025, and deliveries slipped 7%. In all, 297 stories from 163 outlets.

    “Full Self-Driving”, renamed and in court

    On 9 October Reuters reported that Tesla had started calling “Full Self-Driving” “Tesla Assisted Driving” on its European websites, dropping a name regulators had called misleading as Elon Musk pushed for EU-wide approval. On 16 October a US appeals court threw out an order letting California customers sue as a class over the software's claimed capabilities, and at the end of the month a Seoul court rejected 88 owners' claims for refunds. In between, on 22 October, the Los Angeles Times reported that a self-driving Tesla had struck and killed a 71-year-old pedestrian on Interstate 80 in Vallejo. On X the European rollout had its own audience: Matteo Salvini's post of support drew 70,032 views, and one of the first test drives in Latvia 15,230. In all, 290 stories from 111 outlets and 24 posts.

    Robotaxis: a probe, a deadline and a Halloween ride

    Tesla's robotaxi had a mixed month in the news. On 12 October the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it had opened a preliminary probe into 1,000 Cybercabs and Model Y cars over claims that they sped in school zones, and Musk, on a livestream, called Waymo's cars “pet destroyers”. On 21 October Tesla said it aimed to sell Cybercabs to customers by the end of 2026. On X the car was a lifestyle object: a video captioned “Coffee and Contemplation just hits harder in the Tesla Cybercab” drew 4.2 million views, and a Cybercab driving skeletons around Austin for Halloween 1.0 million.     The Roadster takes off

    Tesla first showed a next-generation Roadster in 2017 and promised deliveries in 2020. On Thursday 15 October it finally unveiled the car at the SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, with stunts: it drove upside down, flipped in mid-air on SpaceX-derived cold-gas thrusters and, Tesla says, reaches 60 mph in under a second. Reserving the thruster version costs $250,000, Engadget reported. The largest audiences were on X: Musk's own teaser drew 15.9 million views and Watcher.Guru's “officially unveils” post 4.6 million.     Tesla and SpaceX, “a good idea”

    SpaceX and Tesla reported third-quarter results on consecutive days, and the question going in was a merger. On SpaceX's call on 20 October Elon Musk said combining his two public companies would be “a good idea” and that both boards were exploring it; the Financial Times and BBC led with it that evening. Tesla's own results the next day beat revenue estimates at $28.05 billion, though spending on AI and robotaxis weighed on profit. On 22 October Reuters reported that Musk's public endorsement of the $3.5 trillion deal had rattled some insiders, who feared it could delay the process. In all, 1,411 stories from 346 outlets: 29% of Tesla's news for the month.

Scope: every English-language news story and public post Scano collected from 1 to 31 October 2026 (New York time) that names Tesla, BYD, Rivian, Xpeng or Lucid. A news story counts when the brand is in its headline or opening lines, or is named at least three times. Lucid counts only in stories about cars. Stories about Boyd Group and Boyd Gaming, whose shares trade as BYD, and about Nikola Tesla were removed, as were stock watchlists and pages that carry the name only in a sidebar of other headlines.

Share of voice uses news only, because news is collected the same way for every brand. Social posts are collected unevenly across brands, so they are shown for scale and never compared. Press releases count like any other story; we identify them by their distribution credit (PR Newswire, Business Wire, GlobeNewswire and others).

Materials are quoted in English, as published; this report translates and paraphrases nothing. Translate opens the headline in Google Translate, whose output is the translator's, not ours.
