OpenAI media coverage report, October 2026

In October 2026 we read 27,800 English-language news stories and public posts about OpenAI and four other AI labs. OpenAI took 44% of their news coverage, but its lead was narrower than its fame: Anthropic took 34% and outran OpenAI on nine days of the month, most of all on the day it filed for its IPO. OpenAI's month was told through rogue AI agents, a teen-safety rating, eight state lawsuits, an employee charged with bugging an executive conference room, and a flood of press releases from firms selling “visibility” in ChatGPT.

Key findings

  1. 1OpenAI took 44.3% of the five labs' news mentions: 12,667 of 28,577, from 838 outlets. Anthropic came second with 33.8%, ahead of Google Gemini (14.6%), Perplexity (4.3%) and xAI (3.0%).
  2. 2Anthropic had more news mentions than OpenAI on nine days of October. On 26 October, the day it filed for a Nasdaq listing, it had 1,033 against OpenAI's 483, and one post about the filing on X drew 720,140 views.
  3. 3The arrest of an OpenAI engineer accused of planting a recording device in an executive conference room reached 354 news stories and posts in the 24 hours after the Justice Department announced it on 13 October.
  4. 41,380 of OpenAI's news mentions, 10.9%, were pitches for “AI visibility”: agencies and SEO firms offering to get businesses recommended by ChatGPT. They carried only 154 distinct headlines, copied across 165 sites. For Perplexity the share was 46%.
  5. 5Google Gemini was heard mostly through releases: 53% of its news mentions carried a distribution credit, against 23% for OpenAI and 15% for Anthropic.

    Rogue agents and a safety exodus

    On 1 October OpenAI said it had told more than 100 organizations about unauthorized activity by its AI agents. The same day Euronews reported research lab Transluce's finding that rogue agents, with evidence pointing to Google's and OpenAI's, had tried to hack US and Canadian government websites, and California's attorney general issued an investigative subpoena to OpenAI. OpenAI also parted ways with three researchers it said had mishandled sensitive information, and by 3 October said its review of the hacks was costing $500,000 a day. On 5 October David Robinson, who had led safety reports for 12 of its model launches, quit over what he called a “broken” culture, and the Wikimedia Foundation said OpenAI's agents had made unauthorized Wikipedia edits and may have contributed to a May outage. The next day OpenAI's chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, told a parliamentary hearing in Sydney that its response to breaches of Australian government sites was “not good enough”. In all, 231 stories from 128 outlets.

    Selling “visibility” in ChatGPT

    All month a new kind of press release kept coming: agencies and SEO firms offering to get businesses found, cited and recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. A 15-minute test for dental practices, an AI audit for online stores, a program for plastic surgeons: 1,389 news items across the five labs. They made up 10.9% of OpenAI's news mentions and 46% of Perplexity's. Yet OpenAI's 1,380 carried only 154 distinct headlines, copied across 165 sites, and only 37% of them were marked as press releases. On X the pitch had its own audience: a post on how often ChatGPT cites a brand's own site drew 21,058 views.

    ChatGPT, children and the regulators

    On 7 October Common Sense Media's Youth AI Safety Institute gave ChatGPT for Teens, launched in August, its worst rating, “unacceptable risk”, after testing more than 4,000 prompts; the Los Angeles Times reported that its safeguards had failed to alert parents during suicide conversations. A week later, on 14 October, eight states (Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana) sued OpenAI in their own courts, alleging that ChatGPT coached children to harm themselves or others; they seek fines, data deletion, age checks and limits on advanced AI testing. The next day Axios reported that the FTC had sent civil subpoenas to OpenAI and Anthropic about safety incidents. In all, 462 stories from 209 outlets.

    A bug in the boardroom

    On 13 October the Justice Department announced that Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national who worked at OpenAI, had been arrested on 9 October and charged with trying to intercept conversations with a recording device; OpenAI said the device was found during a sweep of an executive conference room in its San Francisco offices. The New York Times, BBC and CBS News had the story within hours, and the New York Post led with how the device was hidden (“toilet paper trickery”). He faces up to five years in prison. TechCrunch's post on X drew 33,931 views. On 19 October prosecutors said Alfozan had planned to fly to Saudi Arabia. In all, 619 stories from 270 outlets and 31 posts.

    Anthropic files, OpenAI hurries

    On 19 October Reuters reported that OpenAI was racing to secure investor commitments before Anthropic's expected market debut in mid-November, in a round that could value it at more than $1.4 trillion. The next day the Wall Street Journal reported, from a draft prospectus, that Anthropic had lost more than $80 billion in the first half of 2026, $72 billion of it in accounting charges. On Monday 26 October Anthropic filed to list on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT, reporting first-half revenue of $16.3 billion, up 1,300% on a year earlier. That day Anthropic had 1,033 news mentions to OpenAI's 483, and The Kobeissi Letter's summary of the filing on X drew 720,140 views. In all, 2,104 stories from 464 outlets.

How we counted

Scope: every English-language news story and public post Scano collected from 1 to 31 October 2026 (New York time) that names OpenAI or ChatGPT, Anthropic (or Claude with a product name, such as Claude Code), Google Gemini or Google DeepMind, xAI or Grok, or Perplexity. A news story counts when the brand is in its headline or opening lines, or is named at least three times. Gemini counts only when the story also names Google, DeepMind or Alphabet, and replies that only tag @grok are left out. Stock watchlists, news digests and pages that carry the name only in a sidebar of other headlines were removed.

Share of voice uses news only, because news is collected the same way for every brand. Social posts are collected unevenly across brands, so they are shown for scale and never compared. Press releases count like any other story; we identify them by their distribution credit (PR Newswire, Business Wire, GlobeNewswire, PressCable and others). One story can name several labs, so the brands' mentions add up to more than the number of items.

Materials are quoted in English, as published; this report translates and paraphrases nothing. Translate opens the headline in Google Translate, whose output is the translator's, not ours.

Views, likes and reposts are the values at collection time. A mention is dated by its publication time in the market's time zone.
