A local blogger posts a screenshot of your app's error message to a channel with a large following. Within an hour, a dozen other channels have forwarded it. Nobody typed your brand name, so your monitoring tool saw nothing. You find out when a journalist calls.
This tutorial fixes that, one step at a time. You will set the ground rules, write queries that survive many scripts, map the channels that matter, cover screenshots and video, count forwards sensibly, check sentiment and route alerts. Each step ends with something you can test.
Founder Pavel Durov said in March 2025 that Telegram has "significantly over 1 billion monthly active users". Telegram's FAQ says a channel "can have an unlimited number of subscribers," and groups can hold up to 200,000 members. In parts of Central Asia, the Caucasus and Eastern Europe, channels often break news before websites do.
What you will build
By the end you will have a setup that does seven things. Read the list once, then work through each step below.
- Set the rules. Agree that you watch public channels and groups only.
- Write queries in every script. Brand, products and people in Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic script and common typos.
- Find channels by hand. Use Telegram search and catalogs to see what is out there.
- Map channels in tiers. News, industry and community sources, reviewed every quarter.
- Cover images and video. OCR for screenshots, speech-to-text for videos and video notes.
- Count forwards once. Keep the original as one mention and report the reach it gathered.
- Check sentiment, then route alerts. Test each language, then send spikes and a daily digest where your team reads.

Step 1: Set the rules
Decide what you will watch before you touch a tool. It settles what is possible and what is ethical.
| Content | Can you monitor it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Public channels | ✓ | Anyone can open them by link or username |
| Public groups | ✓ | Telegram says "public groups can be joined by anyone" |
| Comments under public channel posts | Partial | They usually sit in a linked public discussion group |
| Private channels and groups (invite-only) | ✕ | Access is limited to invited members |
| Private chats and DMs | ✕ | Private to the people in them |
| Secret chats | ✕ | End-to-end encrypted and stored only on the devices |
Write the rule into your monitoring brief in one line: public channels and public groups only. It saves arguments later.
Step 2: Write queries in every script
List your brand, product names, executives and campaign hashtags. For each one, add every spelling your audience uses. A Turkish brand can appear in Latin script in Türkiye and in Cyrillic in a Kazakh or Russian-language channel. Arabic and Persian channels mix scripts and transliterations.
Then work through this order:
- Core names. Brand and product names in each script.
- Transliterations and typos. The two or three ways people actually type them.
- People. Your CEO and spokespeople, again in each script.
- Competitors. Same treatment, if you want share of voice later.
- Exclusions. If your brand name is also a common word, exclude the phrases that cause false matches.
Test it: paste five recent posts you know mention you into a doc. Each one should match at least one query.
Step 3: Find channels by hand
You can start without a tool. Manual search shows you what exists and gives you a baseline to judge vendors against.
Telegram's built-in search
Use the search box above the chat list to find public channels and groups by name or username. Search for your brand, your products and your executives. Inside any chat you have joined, you can search past messages.
Telegram also added a search for public posts. Its July 2025 announcement says the new "Posts" tab shows results from public channels and is "initially available to Telegram Premium users." The developer documentation adds that Premium users get a daily allowance of free searches, after which each search costs Telegram Stars.
Channel catalogs
Third-party catalogs list channels by country, language and topic, often with subscriber counts. They are good for discovery. Treat them as a starting map: listings are often incomplete, some subscriber counts are inflated and coverage varies a lot by country.
Where manual search stops
- It matches post text, so a name inside a photo or spoken in a video note will not come up.
- Post searches are capped per day, then paid.
- There are no alerts, no export, no sentiment and no history charts.
- One person's search history is not a report you can send to a manager.
Joining and reading the 20 to 50 channels that matter works for a small brand in one market. It breaks as soon as you add a second language, a competitor or a weekend.
Step 4: Map channels in tiers
Turn what you found into a source list with three tiers:
- Tier 1: national and regional news channels, and journalists who post on Telegram.
- Tier 2: industry, business and city channels where your customers gather.
- Tier 3: public groups and discussion threads under big channels, where complaints show up.
Start with your tool's existing coverage, then fill the gaps from Step 3. Many regional outlets run a Telegram channel as their main distribution, so track the channel, not only the website. Review the list every quarter, because channels rise and fade fast.
Test it: pick one story from last month. Check that at least one Tier 1 channel on your list carried it.
Step 5: Cover images and video
A large share of Telegram content is not plain text. Posts carry screenshots with the key words inside the picture, videos, round video notes recorded in the app, and albums where several photos share one caption.
Turn on OCR, which reads text in images and video frames, and speech-to-text, which transcribes what people say in videos and video notes. We cover this gap in depth in image and video monitoring.
Test it: find one screenshot and one video note that mention your brand. Both should appear as mentions with the text or transcript attached.
Step 6: Count forwards once
Channels forward each other constantly. One story can appear in dozens of channels within an hour, sometimes with a new comment on top, sometimes copied without credit.
If your tool counts each copy as a new mention, one post looks like a crisis. If it drops them all as duplicates, you lose the picture of how far the story spread. Most teams count the original once and report reach separately. Write your rule down so monthly numbers stay comparable.
Test it: take a story you know was forwarded widely. Your report should show it once, with the forwards visible underneath.
Step 7: Check sentiment, route alerts
Pull 20 mentions in each language you track and label them yourself. Compare with the tool's scores. A model trained only on English tends to mark most Russian or Turkish posts as neutral. If one language comes back mostly neutral, do not report sentiment for it yet.
Then set up two kinds of alerts:
- Spike alerts when volume or negativity jumps, sent to the people who can act within the hour. Our crisis monitoring playbook shows why that first hour matters.
- A daily digest each morning for everyone else.
Send them where people actually read. If your comms team lives in Telegram, a Telegram alert gets seen faster than an email.

Checklist: test a monitoring tool
Give each vendor a past week you know well. Count how many of the Telegram posts you remember it finds, then tick off the list.
- Covers the public channels in your markets, and lets you add any public channel you find
- Reads text inside images, screenshots and video frames (OCR)
- Transcribes speech in videos and video notes
- Links forwarded copies to the original, while showing how far the story spread
- Scores sentiment with models built for each language you track
- Sends spike alerts and a daily digest to Telegram as well as email
- Puts Telegram, news and other social networks in one feed and one report
- Does not offer, or hint at, access to private chats or invite-only groups

Conclusion
Telegram monitoring is not a keyword search problem. It is a coverage problem, a media problem, a duplication problem and a language problem at once. Manual search gets you started, but it stops at text, at a daily limit and at one person's attention.
Work through the steps in order: rules, queries, discovery, a channel map, images and video, forwards, then sentiment and alerts. Test each one before you move on.

FAQs
Can you monitor private Telegram chats?
No, and you should not try. Private chats, DMs, secret chats and invite-only groups are private to their members. Brand monitoring covers public channels and public groups only.
Does Telegram have a search for public posts?
Yes. Since July 2025, the Posts tab in search shows results from public channels. It launched for Premium users, and Telegram's developer docs say searches beyond a daily free allowance cost Telegram Stars. It has no alerts, export or sentiment.
Can monitoring tools read text in Telegram images and videos?
Some can. Look for OCR, which reads text in images and video frames, and speech-to-text, which transcribes what people say in videos and video notes. Scano does both.
How do I find which Telegram channels to monitor?
Start with your monitoring tool's existing coverage, then add channels from Telegram's built-in search, third-party catalogs and your team's own reading. Group them into news, industry and community tiers, and review the list every quarter.
Should Telegram monitoring replace news monitoring?
No. Telegram adds speed and community voices, but news sites still drive much of what journalists and executives read. Track both in one place. Our guide to social listening vs media monitoring explains how the two fit together.
