The Cision renewal quote arrives, and it is higher than last year. You look at what your team actually used: the media database for a few pitch lists, monitoring that "doesn't seem to catch all," and two PR Newswire releases. The bill is for the whole bundle.

Cision sells three jobs in one contract: a journalist database, media monitoring, and press release distribution with a newsroom. Most teams need one or two of those done well. This guide helps you decide which job you are really paying for, then shows the tools built for it.

Which job do you need?

Pick the card that matches the work your team does every week. Each one jumps to the review.

Typical annual cost of Cision and seven alternatives: Meltwater $25,800, Onclusive $13,706, Muck Rack $13,000, Cision $12,625, Scano $5,004, Semrush AI PR Toolkit (Prowly) $1,788, Prezly $1,440
Typical annual cost in USD: entry plan × 12 where prices are public, Vendr's buyer-reported median otherwise. Mynewsdesk (EUR only) and Agility PR Solutions (quote-only, no Vendr data) not shown. Checked October 13, 2026.

Why teams leave Cision

Most teams do not leave because Cision is a bad product. It scores 8 out of 10 on TrustRadius across 458 ratings. They leave because of price, contract terms and gaps in the part they rely on most.

$12,625Cision median contract a year (Vendr)
$2–10ktypical onboarding fee (Vendr)
3–7%typical yearly price increase (Vendr)
30–60 daysusual auto-renewal notice (Vendr)

Cision does not publish prices. The figures above are buyer-reported data from Vendr, not a list price. They describe a bundle: you pay for the database even if you mainly track coverage, and for monitoring even if you mainly pitch.

"Sorting features are clunky… media monitoring doesn't seem to catch all."

That line comes from a reviewer on TrustRadius, where several others mention a steep learning curve. If monitoring is the part you report to leadership, missed articles are the most expensive gap.

Cision has been owned by Platinum Equity since January 2020, and it closed its purchase of Brandwatch in June 2021. The product you use is one part of a large suite, priced and packaged like one.

Capability matrix

Here is what each vendor lists on its own site, measured against Cision's own product list. Use it to rule tools in or out before you book demos.

✕ means the feature is not listed on the vendor's pricing, plans or home page, not that it can never be bought. "Partial" notes: Scano's journalist directory is built from bylines, without contact data. Muck Rack sells distribution as an add-on. Prowly has monitoring on Pro and Business only, and sends releases by email to your lists. Prezly emails your own contacts. Agility lets you post in its shared newsroom. Mynewsdesk publishes only its Essential price.

Job 1: Monitoring and reporting

Choose from this group if your main Cision job is tracking coverage and reporting on it. Neither tool here sends press releases.

1. Scano

Scano news mentions list with a volume chart over time
Every mention in one feed, with volume over time, so you see coverage spikes as they build.

Scano is an AI media monitoring and social listening platform. It tracks news sites, social networks, messengers, blogs, forums and reviews across 1M+ sources in 20+ languages. It is strongest where English-first tools are thin: Türkiye, Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Gulf, including Telegram channels and VK as well as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Features

  • Image and video monitoring: OCR reads text in images and video frames, and speech-to-text transcribes videos and stories, including Telegram video notes.
  • AI sentiment with dedicated models for English, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, Kazakh, Persian, Hebrew and French.
  • AI Analyst: ask questions about your coverage in plain language, with answers that link to the source posts.
  • A daily digest and spike signals when volume or negativity jumps, sent to email and Telegram.
  • 13 analytics reports, theme comparison and share of voice, exported to Excel, Word and PDF on your template.
  • Smart tags, a journalist directory built from bylines, and unlimited users on every plan, plus iOS and Android apps.

Downsides

  • No journalist contact database and no press release distribution. If you pitch every week, pair Scano with an outreach tool.
  • No print, TV or radio monitoring.
  • Starter's 10,000 mentions a month fill fast for a busy brand.
  • A smaller review footprint than the big suites, so test it on your own brand.

Pricing: public on scano.me/price, and annual billing saves 15%.

Plan Monthly Billed annually Themes Mentions / month
Starter $490 $417/mo 5 10,000
Professional $1,290 $1,097/mo 15 150,000
Business $2,290 $1,947/mo 25 500,000
Enterprise from $3,900 from $3,315/mo 40+ 1,000,000+

Starter on annual billing comes to about $5,000 a year, well under half of Cision's Vendr median. Mention caps are hard limits: you top up or upgrade, with no surprise overage bills.

2. Onclusive

Onclusive media monitoring and PR measurement

Onclusive is a large monitoring and PR measurement vendor with strong print and broadcast coverage. It was formed in 2022 by STG from Kantar Reputation Intelligence, PRgloo and Onclusive.

Features

  • Monitoring across 3M+ online sources, 70K+ print outlets and 6K+ broadcast channels (onclusive.com).
  • Social listening across 25+ platforms.
  • PR measurement and analytics dashboards.
  • A media contacts database with outreach.

Downsides

  • Priced at or above Cision's median, so it fixes coverage gaps more than budget.
  • No published prices or self-serve trial.
  • Press release distribution is not part of the offer on its homepage.

Pricing: quote-only. Vendr reports a median of $13,706 a year, with a range of $9,539–$24,585.

Job 2: Pitching journalists

Choose from this group if your team lives in media lists and pitch emails. Both tools include some monitoring, but outreach is what they are built for.

3. Muck Rack

Muck Rack journalist database and PR platform

Muck Rack is a PR platform built around journalist profiles, with pitching, coverage monitoring and reporting.

Features

  • Journalist profiles with beats, past coverage and contact details.
  • Media lists and pitch tracking.
  • Coverage monitoring and reports; podcast monitoring on Standard and up.
  • Press release distribution as an add-on.

Downsides

  • Reviewers on TrustRadius (8.2/10, 35 ratings) say some articles "aren't captured based on my keywords."
  • One reviewer found it "missing huge swaths of industries and reporters within those industries."
  • Priced close to Cision, so it is a better pitching tool more than a cheaper one.

Pricing: Starter, Standard and Premier are all "Contact us" on the pricing page. AI sentiment, custom dashboards and the API are on Premier only. Vendr reports a median of $13,000 a year, with renewal increases of 5–15%.

4. Prowly (Semrush AI PR Toolkit)

Prowly, now the Semrush AI PR Toolkit

Prowly's site now says "Prowly is now the Semrush AI PR Toolkit" (prowly.com). It combines a journalist database, AI-drafted pitches and releases, email outreach and monitoring.

Features

  • Over 1 million journalist profiles (Semrush help center).
  • AI help to draft pitches and press releases.
  • Email outreach with open, click and reply tracking.
  • Media monitoring on Pro and Business; competitor tracking on Business.

Downsides

  • No monitoring on the Base plan.
  • Every plan has limits on emails, contact exports and monitoring.
  • During the trial you cannot view or export contact details.
  • No wire distribution.

Pricing: Base costs $149 a month, Pro $279 and Business $499, according to the Semrush plans page. Every plan has a 7-day free trial.

Job 3: Newsroom and distribution

Choose from this group if you mostly publish news to journalists who already know you. You keep the newsroom and skip the wire contract.

5. Prezly

Prezly online newsroom and PR CRM

Prezly is a PR CRM with branded newsrooms and email campaigns. You send releases to your own contacts rather than over a wire.

Features

  • An online newsroom with unlimited stories and campaigns.
  • Contact management for up to 10,000 contacts on Standard.
  • Email campaigns from your own domain on Standard.
  • Full analytics on every plan.

Downsides

  • No journalist database and no media monitoring on the pricing page.
  • Essential allows one user, Prezly branding and sending from a Prezly address.
  • Reviewers on TrustRadius (9.6/10, 9 ratings) find segments and tagging "not intuitive."

Pricing: on prezly.com/pricing, Essential costs €100 a month billed annually ($120 on the USD list) for 1 user and 5,000 contacts. Standard costs €250 ($300) for 2 users and 10,000 contacts, and Enterprise is custom. There is a 14-day free trial with no credit card.

6. Mynewsdesk

Mynewsdesk newsroom and PR distribution

Mynewsdesk combines a hosted newsroom, press release distribution to journalists and media monitoring, sold as separate or bundled plans.

Features

  • A newsroom, with multi-market newsrooms on PR Distribution (plans page).
  • A journalist database and journalist matching on PR Distribution.
  • Online and social monitoring, with podcasts, radio, TV, YouTube and TikTok on Media Monitoring.
  • Email reports and alerts.

Downsides

  • Essential has no journalist database, and 4 press releases a year is tight.
  • The full database and unlimited releases are quote-only.
  • Prices are in euros, and annual pricing is not published.

Pricing: Essential costs from €220 a month, billed monthly with no commitment. It includes 4 press releases a year, monitoring for 1 brand and a newsroom for 1 market. PR Distribution and Media Monitoring are price on request, and there is a 10-day free trial of Essential.

Job 4: One suite for every job

Choose from this group if you really use all three jobs and want one vendor. Expect a sales-led, annual contract either way.

7. Meltwater

Meltwater media intelligence suite

Meltwater is Cision's closest like-for-like rival. Its site lists media and social monitoring, a media database, press distribution and influencer tools in one contract.

Features

  • News, social and broadcast monitoring.
  • A media database and press distribution (meltwater.com).
  • Influencer discovery and management.
  • Analytics and reporting dashboards.

Downsides

  • The median contract is about twice Cision's.
  • Reviewers on TrustRadius (7.6/10, 179 ratings) cite lock-in, price and complexity.
  • Reviewers say it "misses mentions from less mainstream publications" and has outdated journalist data.

Pricing: the pricing page lists plans without prices, a 12-month minimum contract and no self-serve free trial. Vendr reports a median of $25,800 a year across 126 purchases, plus $2,000–$10,000 onboarding and 3–7% annual increases.

8. Agility PR Solutions

Agility PR Solutions media database and monitoring

Agility is the closest match to Cision's three-part shape at a smaller scale. It sells separate annual plans plus one-time services.

Features

  • Agility Outreach: "over 1,000,000 journalists and outlets," with list building, pitching and response tracking (plans page).
  • Agility Monitoring: online, print, broadcast and social coverage, plus AI-powered image monitoring.
  • Agility Social Listening: X (Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Reddit, with unlimited topics.
  • Newswire distribution as a flat-fee, one-time service.

Downsides

  • Reviewers on TrustRadius (9/10, 7 ratings) wish more features were included "instead of an upsell."
  • One reviewer says it "definitely needs to work on its media monitoring functionality."
  • Another says it can be hard to find things without asking support.

Pricing: not published. Every plan shows a "Get Pricing" button, and subscriptions are annual. We found no Vendr median for Agility.

Prices and plans checked October 2026. Vendr figures are buyer-reported medians, not list prices.

Free options and trials

No free tool covers all three jobs. But you can cover parts of them for free:

  • Monitoring: Google Alerts catches some news mentions. It has no social coverage, sentiment or reports, and it misses a lot.
  • Newsroom: a press page on your own website works if you keep it updated.
  • Database: a spreadsheet of journalists who already cover your sector, built from their bylines.

For anything you report to a manager or client, you need a paid tool, so use the trials. Prezly offers 14 days with no card, Mynewsdesk 10 days, and the Semrush AI PR Toolkit 7 days with limited contact access. Scano sets up a trial workspace on your own brand after a short demo. Meltwater has no self-serve trial.

Scano analytics report exported to PDF, Excel, Word and email
Rebuild your real monthly report in each trial. In Scano it goes out as PDF, Excel or Word, on a schedule and on your template.

Test before your renewal

Run every trial on the same brief, so the results are comparable. Tick these off before you sign anything.

  • Set up your real brand and two competitors, not the vendor's demo data.
  • Pick a past month you know well, such as a launch, and count the key articles each tool finds.
  • Read 20 mentions in each of your languages and judge whether the sentiment is right.
  • Check regional news, Telegram or VK, and images or videos where your brand is never typed.
  • Rebuild your monthly report, time it, and check whether you could send it without rework.
  • Search for ten journalists you already know and check their contact data.
  • Ask for the contract early: minimum term, renewal notice and user limits.

Decide in four questions

  1. Which job do you do every week? If it is one, buy a specialist. If it is two, pair two specialists; the total is often still below a Cision renewal.
  2. Where does your coverage land? If it lands in Türkiye, Central Asia, the Caucasus or the Gulf, or in Telegram and video, test Scano first.
  3. Do you need print and broadcast? If yes, shortlist Onclusive, Meltwater or Agility, which list those sources.
  4. Do you send releases to strangers or to your list? Strangers point to a wire through Agility, Meltwater or Mynewsdesk. Your own list points to Prezly or Prowly.

Many teams end up with two tools: an outreach or newsroom tool, plus a monitoring platform. Scano plus Prowly or Prezly at entry level still costs well under Cision's median, and Scano includes unlimited users on every plan.

Book a Scano demo and we'll set up a trial workspace on your own brand and competitors, so you can compare coverage with Cision side by side before your renewal date.

FAQs

What are the best Cision alternatives?

It depends on the job. Scano and Onclusive for monitoring, Muck Rack and the Semrush AI PR Toolkit (formerly Prowly) for journalist outreach, Prezly and Mynewsdesk for newsrooms and distribution, and Meltwater or Agility PR Solutions for a single suite.

How much does Cision cost?

Cision does not publish prices. Vendr reports a median contract of $12,625 a year, plus $2,000–$10,000 onboarding, 3–7% annual increases and an auto-renewal notice window that is typically 30–60 days.

What is the cheapest alternative to Cision?

Prezly starts at €100 a month billed annually, and the Semrush AI PR Toolkit at $149 a month. Both cover outreach or newsroom work, not full monitoring. For media monitoring and reporting, Scano starts at $417 a month billed annually, with unlimited users.

Is Meltwater cheaper than Cision?

Usually not. Vendr reports a Meltwater median of $25,800 a year, about twice Cision's $12,625, with a 12-month minimum contract. It makes sense if you need broadcast and influencer data in the same suite.

Can I replace PR Newswire distribution?

Yes, in two ways. Agility sells flat-fee newswire distribution as a one-time service, so you are not tied to an annual suite. Or you can send releases straight to your own journalist list through Prezly or Mynewsdesk.
