The Meltwater renewal email lands 90 days before your contract ends. There is a new quote, a 5% uplift, and a reminder that you have to give notice well ahead of the end date if you want out. You open the dashboard and realize your team uses two of the modules you pay for.

You are not alone. According to Vendr's purchase data, the median Meltwater buyer pays $25,800 a year, across 126 tracked purchases. Contracts run at least 12 months, and renewals often carry a 3–7% escalator.

Meltwater is a strong product for large teams that need news, social, broadcast and influencer data in one contract. But many teams only need part of that. This guide sorts the alternatives by the job they are built for: media monitoring, social listening, journalist outreach, or deep consumer research. For each one you get features, real prices, honest downsides and who it suits best.

Typical annual cost of Meltwater and eight alternatives: Brandwatch $50,000, Meltwater $25,800, Talkwalker $13,298, Muck Rack $13,000, Cision $12,625, YouScan $5,988, Scano $5,004, Determ $2,988, Brand24 $2,388
Typical annual cost in USD. Sources: vendor pricing pages and Vendr's marketplace, checked October 13, 2026.

Why teams look beyond Meltwater

Most teams leave over price and contract terms, not the product itself. Meltwater scores 7.6 out of 10 on TrustRadius across 179 ratings, and the same complaints recur.

Pricing starts with a sales call

Meltwater's pricing page lists four plans and no prices. It says pricing is tailored, sets a 12-month minimum contract, and offers no self-serve free trial. Vendr reports that teams of one to five users typically pay $15,000–$30,000 a year, plus $2,000–$10,000 for onboarding.

Contracts that are hard to leave

Reviewers describe pressure to sign multi-year deals to avoid steep renewal increases, with "no flexibility to terminate early." Another calls the contracts "unfavorable to customers." Before you renew, find your notice period. It is in your contract, and it is usually weeks or months before the end date.

Paying for everything to use one thing

Meltwater covers news, social, broadcast, influencers and a media database. That breadth is the selling point, and also the problem. One reviewer wrote: "It does A LOT of things — but I don't even understand all it does." Another flagged "too many a la carte items," which "starts to price out the client."

Gaps in local coverage

Big suites are built around major English-language outlets. Reviewers report that Meltwater "misses mentions from less mainstream publications," and that its media database has "outdated information on journalists." If your audience reads regional or non-English media, test that coverage before anything else.

What to look for in a Meltwater alternative

Start with the job you need done, then check coverage and AI. The order matters: most bad switches happen because a team buys a lighter suite when it needed a specialist.

Pick the job first

Meltwater bundles four jobs that other vendors sell separately:

  • Media monitoring: news sites, blogs and forums, with share of voice and coverage reports.
  • Social listening: mentions, sentiment and trends across social networks and messengers.
  • Journalist outreach: a media contact database, pitching and press release distribution.
  • Consumer research: years of historical social data and an analyst-grade query language.
Meltwater bundles four jobs. Media monitoring: Scano, Determ, Cision, Onclusive. Social listening: Scano, Talkwalker, YouScan, Brand24, Awario, Mention. Journalist outreach: Muck Rack, Cision. Consumer research: Brandwatch, Talkwalker.
Most alternatives specialize in one or two of the four jobs Meltwater bundles.

Write down which two of these your team uses every week. That list is your shortlist filter.

Check coverage where your audience actually is

A tool that is excellent in the US can be thin in Türkiye, Central Asia or the Gulf. Ask every vendor for a trial on your own brand and markets, then count what it finds:

  • Regional news outlets in local languages, not only the big English-language titles.
  • Messengers and regional networks your audience uses, such as Telegram or VK, not just X and Facebook.
  • Mentions inside images and videos, where your logo or name appears but nobody types it.

Demand AI that does real work

Every vendor now has an AI assistant. The useful test is whether it saves analyst hours:

  • Sentiment in your languages. Ask for accuracy on your own samples, not the vendor's English benchmark.
  • Answers grounded in your mentions. The assistant should cite the posts behind each claim.
  • Spike and crisis alerts that tell you why volume moved, not only that it did.

Read the contract, not only the price

Check four things before you sign: the minimum term, the renewal notice period, how many users are included, and what happens when you hit the mention cap. A cheap plan with a 1,000-mention cap or three user seats can cost more than it looks.

8 best Meltwater alternatives in 2026

1. Scano

Scano reads the text inside an Instagram story and turns it into a searchable mention
Scano picks up a brand or place named only inside a story image, with no caption to search.

Scano is an AI media monitoring and social listening platform. It tracks news, social networks, messengers, blogs and forums in 20+ languages, and reads what is inside images and videos. It covers 1M+ sources and is strongest where English-first tools go thin: Türkiye, Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Gulf, including Telegram and VK.

Features

  • Image and video monitoring: OCR reads text in images and video frames; speech-to-text transcribes what people say in videos and stories.
  • AI sentiment with dedicated models for English, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, Kazakh, Persian, Hebrew and French, so local-language posts are not all scored neutral.
  • AI Analyst: ask questions about your mentions in plain language and get answers that link to the source posts.
  • Daily digest and spike signals: a morning summary, plus alerts when volume or negativity jumps. Alerts go to email and Telegram.
  • 13 analytics reports, theme comparison and share of voice, with exports to Excel, Word and PDF and scheduled reports on your template.
  • Social Space: a unified inbox for comments and messages across your own accounts (included in Business, an add-on below it).
  • Unlimited users on every plan, plus iOS and Android apps.

Pricing

Prices are public on scano.me/price. Annual billing saves 15%.

Plan Monthly Billed annually Themes Mentions / month
Starter $490 $417/mo 5 10,000
Professional $1,290 $1,097/mo 15 150,000
Business $2,290 $1,947/mo 25 500,000
Enterprise from $3,900 from $3,315/mo 40+ 1,000,000+

Starter on annual billing comes to about $5,000 a year, roughly a fifth of Meltwater's median contract. Even Business, with 500,000 mentions a month, stays below that median.

Downsides

  • No print, TV or radio monitoring. If broadcast clips matter, pair Scano with a broadcast specialist.
  • No journalist contact database or press release distribution. Scano builds a journalist directory from bylines, but you bring your own contacts.
  • Mention caps are hard limits: you top up or upgrade when you reach them. That means no surprise overage bills, but Starter's 10,000 mentions fill fast for a busy brand.

Best for: PR teams, agencies and brands that need reliable monitoring in multilingual markets, want image and video mentions included, and prefer published prices to a sales-led quote.

2. Talkwalker (by Hootsuite)

Talkwalker by Hootsuite

Talkwalker is a social listening platform that Hootsuite acquired in 2024. It is the closest match to Meltwater's social side, with strong image and video recognition.

Features

  • Social listening with AI sentiment and trend detection
  • Image and video recognition for logos and scenes
  • Alerts and historical data on higher plans
  • Unlimited users on the Core plan

Pricing: Quote-only across Core, Analyze and Business plans (pricing page). Vendr reports a median of $13,298 a year. There is no free trial, only a demo.

Downsides

  • Reviewers on TrustRadius call it "pretty expensive" and "hard to master" for less experienced users.
  • Reviewers ask for better forum coverage in non-English markets.
  • Sales-led buying, much like Meltwater.

Best for: social media teams already on Hootsuite that want deep listening in the same stack.

3. Brandwatch

Brandwatch consumer intelligence dashboard

Brandwatch is a consumer intelligence platform with a large archive of social data and a powerful query language. Cision acquired it in 2021 for a reported $450 million.

Features

  • Years of historical social data for research and trend analysis
  • Advanced query builder and custom dashboards
  • Influencer database of 30M+ creators
  • Social media management with unlimited channels

Pricing: No public prices (pricing page). Vendr reports a median of $50,000 a year, with 15–25% off for multi-year terms. No free trial.

Downsides

  • The most expensive tool on this list. Reviewers on TrustRadius say it is "not as accessible for smaller businesses."
  • Data export is capped at 50,000 rows a day.
  • Usually needs a trained analyst to get full value.

Best for: large research and insights teams with a budget to match.

4. YouScan

YouScan social media listening with Visual Insights

YouScan is a social listening platform known for visual analytics, which finds brand logos and scenes in images.

Features

  • AI aspect-based sentiment and trend detection
  • Visual Insights for image recognition (top plan only)
  • Insights Copilot, an AI assistant for questions about your mentions
  • Alerts and integrations with Slack, Teams and WhatsApp
  • Unlimited users

Pricing: Starter costs $499 a month, billed annually only, for 3 topics, 15,000 mentions a month and 10 Copilot questions a month. The Unlimited plan is quote-only. No free trial is listed, only a demo.

Downsides

  • Visual Insights and Audience Insights are reserved for the top plan.
  • Annual commitment only, and 3 topics is tight for a brand plus competitors.
  • No media database or press release tools.

Best for: marketing and insights teams focused on social media and visual brand presence.

5. Brand24

Brand24 mentions feed with sentiment labels

Brand24 is a self-serve listening tool with clear published prices and a 14-day free trial, no card needed.

Features

  • AI sentiment, mention volume and reach analytics
  • Influencer scoring
  • Storm Alerts for sudden spikes
  • PDF and PPT reports, plus a mobile app

Pricing (brand24.com/prices)

Plan Monthly Billed annually Keywords Mentions / month Users
Individual $249 $199/mo 3 2,000 1
Team $349 $299/mo 7 10,000 Unlimited
Pro $499 $399/mo 12 40,000 Unlimited
Business $699 $599/mo 25 100,000 Unlimited

Enterprise starts at $1,499 a month. API access costs an extra $149.

Downsides

  • The Individual plan refreshes only every 12 hours and allows 2,000 mentions.
  • Reviewers on TrustRadius mention missed brand mentions and support that "can take days to respond."
  • Lighter on news analytics and reporting than a media monitoring suite.

Best for: small businesses and solo marketers who want to start today without a sales call.

6. Determ

Determ mentions feed and filters

Determ, formerly Mediatoolkit, is a Croatian monitoring tool built for simple, real-time tracking with unlimited users and keywords.

Features

  • Real-time monitoring of news and social media
  • AI features on every plan
  • Unlimited users and keywords
  • Archive back to 2020

Pricing (determ.com/pricing): Expand costs $299 a month, or $249 a month billed yearly, for 5 topics and 5,000 mentions. Command costs $499, or $416 billed yearly, for 10 topics and 10,000 mentions. The trial lasts 5 days, or 14 days after a demo.

Downsides

  • Mention caps are low for the price: 5,000 a month on the entry plan.
  • Only 3 months of history by default.
  • No journalist database or press release tools.

Best for: small comms teams that want straightforward tracking and reports.

7. Muck Rack

Muck Rack logo

Muck Rack is a PR platform built around a journalist database, with pitching, coverage monitoring and reporting.

Features

  • Journalist database with AI recommendations for who to pitch
  • Pitch tracking and media lists
  • Coverage monitoring and reports
  • Podcast monitoring (Standard plan and up)

Pricing: All plans are "Contact us" and priced by user count (pricing page). Vendr reports a median of $13,000 a year, with renewal increases of 5–15%. AI sentiment, custom dashboards and the API are on Premier only.

Downsides

  • Reviewers on TrustRadius say some articles "aren't captured based on my keywords" and must be added manually.
  • Some industries and reporters are missing from the database.
  • Social listening is limited compared with dedicated tools.

Best for: PR teams whose main job is pitching journalists, not monitoring.

8. Cision

Cision logo

Cision is the other big PR suite. It combines a media database, monitoring, PR Newswire distribution and Impact analytics, and it owns Brandwatch.

Features

  • Media database and outreach
  • Press release distribution through PR Newswire
  • News and social monitoring
  • Earned media analytics

Pricing: No published prices. Vendr reports a median of $12,625 a year, plus $2,000–$10,000 onboarding, 3–7% annual increases and a typical 30–60 day auto-renewal notice.

Downsides

  • Reviewers on TrustRadius describe sorting as "clunky" and say monitoring "doesn't seem to catch all."
  • A steep learning curve.
  • Same sales-led, annual-contract model you are trying to leave.

Best for: teams that need wire distribution and a media database under one contract.

Prices and plans checked October 13, 2026. Vendr figures are buyer-reported medians, not list prices.

Mention, Awario, Onclusive and other names on your shortlist

Three more tools come up often. Each fits a narrower need.

  • Mention is now part of Agorapulse, which bought it in 2025. It offers a single Company plan with Boolean search, sentiment and white-label reports. Its publishing and reply features are being retired.
  • Awario is the budget pick: from $29 a month billed annually for 3 topics and 30,000 new mentions. Stored history is capped per topic, and the oldest mentions are overwritten.
  • Onclusive was formed in 2022 from Kantar's reputation unit, PRgloo and Onclusive, and later absorbed Critical Mention. It is strong in broadcast monitoring. Prices are quote-only; Vendr reports a median of $13,706 a year.

Is there a free alternative to Meltwater?

Not a real one. Google Alerts is free and catches some news mentions, but it has no social coverage, sentiment or reporting, and it misses a lot. For anything you would show a manager or client, you need a paid tool.

What you can get for free is a trial. Brand24 offers 14 days with no card, Determ offers 5 days (14 after a demo), Awario offers a no-card trial, and Scano sets up a trial workspace on your own brand after a short demo.

How to get real answers from a free trial

A trial only helps if you test it against what you already know. Run every tool on the same brief:

  1. Use your real brand and two competitors, not the vendor's demo data.
  2. Pick a past week you know well, such as a launch or a crisis, and count how many of the key articles and posts each tool finds.
  3. Check your languages. Read 20 mentions in each language and judge whether the sentiment is right.
  4. Look inside images and video. Post a branded photo, or find one, and see whether the tool picks it up without a text mention.
  5. Build the report you send every month. Time how long it takes, and whether it looks good enough to send without rework.
  6. Ask for the contract early. Check the minimum term, the renewal notice period and what happens at the mention cap.

Which Meltwater alternative fits your team?

Match your main need to the tool built for it. Entry prices are the lowest published plan, or Vendr's buyer-reported median where no price is published.

Your main need Look at Entry price Watch out for
Monitoring in multilingual and emerging markets, incl. images and video Scano $417/mo billed annually No print, TV or radio; no contact database
Social listening inside your Hootsuite stack Talkwalker ~$13,300/yr (Vendr) Quote-only, steep learning curve
Deep consumer research Brandwatch ~$50,000/yr (Vendr) Price; needs an analyst
Social and visual brand analytics YouScan $499/mo, annual only Image recognition on top plan only
Self-serve listening on a small budget Brand24 $199/mo billed annually 2,000 mentions and 12-hour refresh on entry plan
Simple tracking for a small comms team Determ $249/mo billed yearly 5,000-mention cap, 3 months of history
Pitching journalists Muck Rack ~$13,000/yr (Vendr) Monitoring misses some keyword matches
Wire distribution plus media database Cision ~$12,600/yr (Vendr) Same annual, sales-led model as Meltwater

So, what's the best Meltwater alternative for you?

It depends on which part of Meltwater you actually use.

  • If you pitch journalists more than you track them, choose Muck Rack. Choose Cision if you also need wire distribution.
  • If you run deep consumer research with a dedicated analyst, choose Brandwatch.
  • If you need cheap self-serve listening this week, start a Brand24 or Awario trial.
  • If you need reliable monitoring of news and social media in several languages and markets, including mentions hidden in images and video, at a published price, try Scano.

Scano costs a fraction of Meltwater's median contract, includes unlimited users on every plan, and has prices you can read before you talk to anyone.

Book a Scano demo and we'll set up a trial workspace on your own brand and competitors, so you can compare results with Meltwater side by side.
